Drummer/vocalist, Chris Curtis (b. 1941, d. 2005), leads skiffle greats The Searchers and a dance hall full of screaming girls in this great Ray Charles cover. Watch "What'd I Say" after the jump.
The footage below is possibly from The Star-Club in Hamburg, Germany where the band played over a hundred gigs in 1963. It appears as though it was produced by ABC Weekend Television out of the UK.
The Searchers look great as they attack the song with fine rock precision all the while Chris belts it out demanding more and more from the band and the audience. I like this quote I found on allmusic.com from Chris Curtis, "People who don't know me well may think I'm off my cake."
Here's a nice fan page about The Searchers days in Germany.
I can't seem to find this song on a CD. Perhaps Ray Charles didn't care for it as much as I do. Here is a link to the 40th Anniversary Collection.
