Sonic Youth "I Wanna Be Your Dog"

This clip is from David Sanborn's "Sunday Night" music show from the late 1980's. I love Sonic Youth and friend's ruckus version of the Iggy Pop classic "I Wanna Be Your Dog." Friends include The Indigo Girls on backing vocals and Daniel Lanois on guitar - the other musical guests for that evening's  show. David Sanborn's wacked out saxophone is a great addition to Kim Gordon's screaming vocals. I'm sure Iggy would be proud. The credits over the end of the song just add to the mayhem. For a moment, all was good in the world of television.

This is my 100th post to Modern Neon Sound! Many thanks to those readers who check in regularly, those who are new, and to those who have left comments. Keep rockin'...

Sour "Hibi No Neiro"

An extremely clever video from Sour for their song "Hibi no Neiro" which translates as "Tone of Everyday."  The video was shot entirely via webcam by Sour fans from around the world.  This video captures the spirit of how we are all one - together on this small planet.

Translated lyrics:
You can see it in any color, because or your clear feeling
Don't worry about it, let's just go as we are
If we can embrace all the differences
The rain will stop, and the sky will shine in rainbow colors

New Look for Modern Neon Sound

Out of the black and into the white.  I decided to give Modern Neon Sound a new look tonight.  Previously, I thought it might be easier to watch videos over a black background, but now I'm not so sure.  I'll give this a try for awhile. Let me know what you think?

Carusella "Star Quality"

It's a morning for rocking out, and today I have stumbled upon just the group for that sort of thing. Carusella is a duo from Tel Aviv, Israel. Tamar Akphek plays guitar, Guy Shechter bangs on the drums and both musicians work the microphone. They are currently touring the United States, but unfortunately I don't see any Los Angeles stops on their schedule just yet. I hope I didn't miss them...I will stay tuned.

It looks like the place to really see them, or any other band for that matter, is at the DUNAJAM in Sardinia, Italy. How fun would it be to hang out on the beaches, cliffs and gardens of that island listening to a bunch of psychedelic and garage rock bands for a week? Oh yeah, it looks like the festival limits the amount of guests to under 200!

Take a listen and let me know what you think.

RIP Alex Chilton

Children by the million sing for Alex Chilton when he comes 'round
They sing "I'm in love. What's that song? I'm in love with that song."
I never travel far without a little Big Star.

Lady Gaga and Beyonce "Telephone"

Perhaps musicians can stop making music videos now that the art form has been perfected in Lady Gaga and Beyonce's new video for "Telephone."  Let the following awards be strewn upon the filmmakers: Best Makeup, Best Costumes, Best Storyline, Best Acting, Best Extras, Best Use of Swear Words, Best Blurred Nudity, Best Blatant Product Placement, Best Dancing, Best Picture Vehicles, and of course Best Director for Jonas Akerlund.

Shilpa Ray "Plea Bargain"

Shilpa Ray - A girl and her harmonium - raw vocals - raw talent! She puts me in mind of Nick Cave, Joanna Newsom, and The Pogues. Punky blues is so hard to do right, but this is really a prime example. Visit her website and click on the music tab to hear all of her songs - really great stuff! I could listen to this voice all day long...and, in fact, I just might.

Here's Shilpa playing solo at The Apartment.

The Muffs "Oh Nina"

Not since Jan and Dean's "The Little Old Lady From Pasadena" has there been a cooler song about a chick from Pasadena...while one was a hot rod racer who nobody could catch, the other may have been a hot rod eraser with a boyfriend who couldn't catch a clue.  I have a feeling it didn't turn out so well for Nina or her boyfriend, oh, but the stories they could tell...Watch as Kim Shattuck and the boys from The Muffs kick out "Oh Nina" with a screaming fury.

The Office Olympics As I See It

Today at work we will be boosting our team building skills and morale with The Office Olympics. It already appears as though this may turn out to be a rejected plot line from the show The Office, but there is no turning back and losing is not an option. In my dreams the afternoon will look something like this...

X-Ray Spex "Germ Free Adolescent"

X-Ray Spex perform "Germ Free Adolescent" on Top of the Pops in 1978.

Her phobia is infection
She needs one to survive
It's her built in protection
Without fear she'd give up and die

and for the a lovely modern ukulele twist on the song please enjoy this performance by Gus and Fin...

The Dollyrots "Brand New Key"

From The Dollyrots "Because I'm Awesome" album comes a great cover of Melanie's "Brand New Key." When the original version of this song was released apparently it caused quite an uproar.  The writer and original singer, Melanie, says that it was even banned by some radio stations.  An innocent song about rollerskating?  Imagine that!

I'm OK alone....but you got something I need...
I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key
I think we should get together and try them out you see.

Check out Melanie's original version after the jump.
